Coach Schaffer taught and coached for 30 years in the Texas public school system.
He started at San Antonio McCollum HS in 1982 when UIL soccer first started. He retired from TRS in 2011 before accepting the Head Women’s coaching position at Texas Lutheran University in January of 2012.
In the 10 years at TLU he became the winningest soccer coach in the history of the Women’s Soccer Program.
Coach Schaffer retired from TLU in November of 2021 and is now currently the Head Girls Soccer Coach at New Braunfels Christian Academy.
Overall, Schaffer has coached in four Texas high school state tournaments and eight Texas high school regional tournaments. He has won 12 district championships and more than 350 high school matches. Schaffer won a pair of Class 5A State Championships in men’s soccer with San Antonio Churchill in 1998 and in 2001.
Schaffer is a two-time finalist for NSCAA National High School Coach of the Year and a two-time winner of the NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year award.
Schaffer twice has been named NSCAA Texas High School Coach of the Year and San Antonio Express-News Coach of the Year.
He is a four-time winner of the Texas High School Coaches Association Region 4 Coach of the Year.
Schaffer and his wife, Joy, have four children: daughter Megan, twins daughters Maggie and Melissa, and son Tim. The Schaffer’s also have 9 grandchildren with the 10th on the way. One more and we will have a soccer team!

Mike graduated from Midway High School in 1979 and from Baylor University in 1983 and again in 1985.
He began coaching at Midway Junior High in 1985 and moved to Granbury Middle School in 1988, making countless friends at both schools. In 1992, he began teaching and coaching at University High School. He became the head boys’ soccer coach in 1993. Mike wanted his student-athletes to be students first and made sure they excelled “...in the classroom, in the community and on the field.” The Trojan Soccer program became his legacy, also coaching the girls’ team beginning in 2010.

His crowning achievement on the field was the 2013 State Championship team that went 33-0. But his ultimate calling was to be a mentor and a selfless friend. His teams performed countless hours of community service. He loved University High School and the South Waco Community. His greatest joy was the Make-A-Wish Come True program that he and 1st Sgt. Leonard Montelongo started. By its 11th year the program had granted over 400 wishes, and that work continues.

With over 36 years of coaching experience, Carl Wiersema has coached the Rider HS Lady Raiders for 27 years, winning 21 District Championships, earning 20 District Coach of the Year honors, and has been named the Girls State COY four times. In addition, he has earned the NSCAA Regional Coach of the year award three times.
Coach Wiersema has National, Advanced National and Premier licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (United Soccer Coaches), as well as an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation. He holds a Master’s degree in education from Midwestern State University and has coached youth through collegiate level teams.
Coach Wiersema began his playing career at Bradenton Christian HS in Bradenton, Florida. He spent his undergraduate career at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain in Georgia. Carl went on to brief stints with the Memphis Americans of the MISL and with Club Platense in Honduras.
From 1984 to 1990, Carl was the Boys Varsity Soccer coach at Tampa Preparatory School where, in 1987, he started a girls program. Carl first came to Wichita Falls in 1990 as an assistant coach for Midwestern State University, helping coach the team to the 1991 NAIA National Championship Runner-up position. After receiving his Master’s Degree from MSU in 1992, Carl headed to Bluefield College in Virginia where he started the Men’s Soccer program. He also served as the Coach and Assessor for Virginia’s Olympic Development Program.
Coach Wiersema returned to Wichita Falls in 1994 as Head Coach of Women’s Soccer at Rider High School. Carl and his wife Delaine, a Physical Education Teacher at Sheppard Elementary School, are proud parents of a daughter, Kateri.
